Contributed talks on any aspect of the theory or application of Geometry or Differential Geometry in the broadest sense are welcome. If you plan to give a talk, please indicate the title on the registration form and send us an abstract of less than one-half a page. SUPPORT: ------- The conference is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the University of Oklahoma. The order of priority for the provision of support is: Plenary speakers, invited speakers, contributed speakers, younger colleagues (including graduate students and new (1991 and later) Ph.D.'s) who have no other support, everybody else. It is our expectation that we will be able to provide all participants with a small travel allowance (e.g. car pools from neighboring states), a private room in a hotel (Sooner House) for all who need a place to stay, and all meals from Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast. There will be no registration fee. TRAVEL INFORFRMATION -------------------- If you are planning to travel by air, you should book your flight into Oklahoma City (not Tulsa!). The following major airlines service Oklahoma City: American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest, TWA, and United. The airport is located in the southwestern portion of Oklahoma City and is about a 30 minute drive from Norman (via I-240 and I-35). There is a possiblity we will be sending some cars to the airport to pick up conference participants during the afternoon and evening of May 9, so please send us your arrival time so that we won't miss you. Limousine service is available between the airport and Norman. The coupon rates are $18 for one passenger, $12 apiece for two,$10 apiece for three, etc. If you plan to take the limousine, let us know and we will mail or fax you a coupon. Taxis from the airport to Norman cost about $30-35 and, of course there are several rental, car agencies. ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: -------------------- The organizing committee consists of Marilyn Breen (Oklahoma), Paul Goodey (Oklahoma), Robert M. Hardt (Rice), Ralph Howard (S. Carolina), Robert Miner (Minnesota), Gerard Walschap (Oklahoma) and Shihshu Walter Wei (Oklahoma). Please forward this message (with a copy to me so that I can get their e-mail address) to others that you think might be interested. Respond on the Registration form that follows as soon as possible so that we can be accurately informed of the number of people who plan to attend. PLENARY TALKS: ------------- The following have agreed to give one-hour plenary talks: Tobias Colding, Courant Institute, New York University "Analysis and Geometry of manifolds with a lower Ricci curvature bound" Abstract: To be announced. William Goldman, University of Maryland "Ergodic Theory on Moduli Spaces" Abstract: Let $M$ be a compact surface with $\chi(M)<0$ and let $X$ be the moduli space of flat $\sut$-bundles (respectively $(-I)$-twisted flat $SU(2)$-bundles) over $M$. When $\partial M\neq\emptyset$, let $\cal C\in[-2,2]^{\pi_0\partial M}$ be a collection of values of the trace of the holonomy over $\partial M$, and let $X_{\cal C}(M)$ denote the subspace of $X(M)$ realizing these boundary values. Then $X_{\cal C}(M)$ carries a natural symplectic structure, and hence a natural volume form, invariant under the mapping class group $\Gamma_M$ of $M$. The action of $\Gamma_M$ on $X(M)$ is ergodic with respect to this measure. More generally, if $G$ is a compact Lie group whose Levi factor is a product of groups locally isomorphic to $SU(2)$, then $\Gamma_M$ is ergodic on the moduli space of equivalence classes of (twisted) represesentations $\pi_1(M)\longrightarrow G$. The proof builds the action of $\Gamma_M$ on $X(M)$ from certain subgroups of $\Gamma_M$ corresponding to subsurfaces of $M$. The ergodic decompositions of the actions of these subgroups on $X(M)$ are computed. For example, a pants decomposition $\cal{P}$ of $M$ determines a map $s_{\cal{P}}:X(M)\longrightarrow\R^N$ which is the ergodic decomposition for the action of the stabilizer of $\cal{P}$ in $\Gamma_M$. The components of $s_{\cal{P}}$ record the conjugacy classes of the curves $\gamma$ in $\cal{P}$. To eliminate the function corresponding to $\gamma$, embed $\gamma$ in the interior of a subsurface $A\subset M$. By applying elements of the subgroup of $\Gamma_M$ corresponding to the mapping class group of $A$, any invariant function is shown to be independent of $s_{\gamma}$. From this follows ergodicity under all of $\Gamma_M$. Karsten Grove, University of Maryland "Positively Curved Manifolds: Classification Problems versus Constructions" Abstract: We will briefly describe the general restrictions known for positively curved manifolds, and the list of known examples. We will then descibe various types of classification problems in terms of "size" or "symmetry" retsrictions. The latter leads to potential constructions of new examples (none found yet). Some of the classification problems as well as some of the constructions involve singular spaces. Fang-Hwa Lin, Courant, New York University and University of Chicago, "Defect measures, fundamental groups and density of Sobolev map, etc." Abstract: The extension theorem for Sobolev maps and the so called gap- phenomena first observed by Hardt-Lin have lead to several natural questions.Interestingly enough, these analytic problems have a lot to do the with the topology of the target manifold. Here we shall give a brief survey on some results obtained by Bethuel,White, and the idea of relaxed energy of Bethuel-Brezis-Coron and a series of works by Giaquinta-Modica-Soucek.I shall also introduce a new and rather elementary idea (of defect measure)which leads to con- clusions obtained earlier by BBC and GMS and more.
